he start of 2025 has set a worrying new milestone in climate history. According to the latest Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) bulletin, January 2025 was the warmest January ever recorded globally. The data reveals that the global average surface air temperature for the month reached 13.23°C, which is 0.79°C higher than the January average between 1991 and 2020.

More significantly, January 2025 recorded 1.75°C above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900), reinforcing the ongoing trend of rising global temperatures. This marks the 18th month out of the last 19 months where global temperatures have consistently exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

  • January 2025 global temperature: 13.23°C
  • Anomaly compared to 1991-2020 average: +0.79°C
  • Anomaly compared to pre-industrial levels: +1.75°C
  • Europe’s temperature increase: 2.51°C above the 1991-2020 average

The period from February 2024 to January 2025 was also one of the hottest 12-month spans in history, measuring 0.73°C above the 1991-2020 average and 1.61°C above pre-industrial levels. This near-record heatwave highlights the persistent and escalating trend of global warming.
